Correct installation is essential for the appearance, stability and service life of SPC flooring. Although click-lock SPC planks do not normally require adhesive, the subfloor, room conditions, layout and perimeter clearance must still be checked carefully.

This guide explains the main SPC flooring installation steps for contractors, distributors, project buyers and installation teams. Exact moisture limits, subfloor tolerances, expansion gaps and site-conditioning requirements should always follow the instructions supplied with the specific flooring product.

 

SPC Flooring Pre-Installation Checklist

1. Confirm the Flooring Specification

Before opening all the cartons, verify that the delivered flooring matches the approved order and project requirements.

• Check the SPC core thickness and total thickness

• Confirm the wear-layer specification

• Check plank dimensions, surface design and color

• Confirm whether IXPE or EVA backing is attached

• Check the locking profile and edge condition

• Compare carton labels and production batches

Planks from several cartons can be reviewed before installation to confirm the overall color effect. When the design contains natural shade variation, the installer can mix planks from different cartons to create a balanced appearance.

2. Inspect and Prepare the Subfloor

A rigid SPC core does not eliminate the need for a suitable base. An uneven or unstable subfloor can allow repeated vertical movement beneath the planks, increasing stress on the click-lock joints.

The subfloor should be:

• Clean and free from dust or construction debris

• Dry and checked using a suitable moisture-testing method

• Solid, stable and free from loose sections

• Flat within the tolerance required for the flooring

• Free from sharp projections and unacceptable low spots

High areas should be corrected and low areas filled with a suitable preparation material. The entire installation area—not only a few visible locations—should be inspected before laying begins.

3. Check Moisture and Site Conditions

SPC flooring has a highly water-resistant surface and core, but moisture beneath the floor should not be ignored. Excess moisture may affect the underlayment, produce odors or create problems around walls and fixed structures.

• Use an appropriate moisture test for the substrate

• Record the results when required by the project

• Repair active water-entry or leakage problems

• Confirm whether a vapor-control layer is required

• Keep the flooring protected from rain and direct sunlight

Storage and conditioning requirements vary between SPC products. The cartons should be stored and prepared according to the supplier's instructions instead of automatically applying one fixed acclimation period to every floor.

4. Confirm the Underlayment Requirement

Some SPC flooring is manufactured with attached IXPE or EVA backing. Other products may require a separately approved underlayment.

The selected underlayment should be compatible with the flooring, subfloor and project requirements. It should be installed flat, without overlapping edges, folds or loose sections.

5. Plan the Plank Direction and Layout

A layout plan reduces unnecessary cutting, narrow edge pieces and excessive material waste. Before installing the first row, measure the room and consider doorways, corridors, fixed cabinets and transitions between spaces.

Layout planning should consider:

• The main viewing direction and room shape

• Width of the first and final rows

• Required stagger between adjacent end joints

• Door frames, columns and fixed objects

• Transitions between rooms or flooring materials

Avoid very narrow pieces along the final wall where possible. The stagger pattern and minimum end-joint distance should follow the product installation instructions.

6. Install the First Rows and Maintain Perimeter Clearance

The first rows establish the alignment for the entire installation. Use suitable spacers along the perimeter and keep the starting row straight.

 

Recommended working sequence:

1. Position the first plank with the correct edge facing the starting direction.

2. Use spacers to maintain the required clearance from the wall.

3. Join the next plank according to the click-lock profile.

4. Check that the end joint is fully closed and level.

5. Continue the row and cut the final plank to the required length.

6. Start the next row using the approved stagger pattern.

Do not force the locking profile or strike the exposed edge directly with a hard tool. If a tapping block or pull bar is required, use it according to the flooring supplier's installation instructions.

7. Cut Around Doorways and Fixed Objects

Door frames, pipes, columns and fixed structures require careful measurement. The floor should not be tightly trapped beneath immovable objects if the installation system requires it to remain floating.

• Measure and mark every cut before cutting the plank

• Use suitable protective equipment and cutting tools

• Maintain the required clearance around fixed objects

• Use suitable transition profiles at necessary locations

• Avoid placing very short joints in high-stress areas

Baseboards and finishing profiles should cover the perimeter clearance without fixing through the floating floor and preventing normal movement.

8. Complete the Final Installation Inspection

After installation, inspect the floor before handing the area over to the customer or other construction teams.

• Check for visible gaps and raised joints

• Walk across the floor and listen for unusual movement or noise

• Confirm perimeter clearance before fitting trim

• Inspect doorway and transition areas

• Remove spacers, dust and installation debris

• Protect the finished floor if other construction work continues

Installation records can include the product batch, room conditions, subfloor inspection, moisture-test results and photographs of important installation details.
